Joao Cancelo’s future in Munich

Bayern Munich has already informed Manchester City that they do not intend to exercise their €70 million option to buy full-back Joao Cancelo permanently. However, the Bundesliga club is open to a deal for less money.

Cancelo requested to leave City in January after losing favor with manager Pep Guardiola. He eventually joined Bayern on a six-month loan with the option to purchase at the conclusion of the season.
Hasan Salihamidzic, the sporting director at Bayern, has openly acknowledged that it is “impossible to envisage” invoking their €70 million acquisition clause, but insiders have told Nova Sports that the Bundesliga team is looking to negotiate a bargain.

Bayern and City have already discussed a lesser price, and it is thought that the Premier League team may lessen their demand slightly, with anything closer to €60 million being a possibility.

While the two parties are still in talks, Nova Sports has learned that City has been informed of outside interest in Cancelo.

When it became evident that the Portugal international would be leaving City, Real Madrid expressed interest in acquiring him. Rival Premier League team Chelsea is also keeping an eye on the issue as they ponder making changes at left-back.

The Blues were not convinced by summer acquisition Marc Cucurella, and if the proper deal was made, they may even consider offers for Ben Chilwell, who City is rumored to be interested in.

Sources have, however, verified that Cancelo prefers to stay at Bayern after the current season. With two assists in his first three appearances in Bavaria, the 28-year-old has already made an impression.

Although Cancelo and Bayern share a desire to remain together, money will ultimately decide. With Lucas Hernandez and Matthijs de Ligt commanding prices of €80 million each when they signed from Atletico Madrid and Juventus, respectively, the club has only ever spent more than €70 million twice in its existence.

The talks are expected to go on; Cancelo is now content to forego his options in order to give Bayern the chance to reach an agreement.
