On Sunday, Uruguay defeated Italy 1-0 to win the Under-20 World Cup for the first time. The Celeste’s triumph puts a stop to a run of four straight victories by European teams in the competition.

Having dominated the whole game against Italy, Uruguay earned a well-deserved victory when Luciano Rodriguez scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute with a close-range header.

The Diego Maradona Stadium hosted more than 40,000 spectators, the majority of whom supported Uruguay. Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, was also present.

Only three goals were allowed by Uruguay’s reliable defense during the tournament, all of which came against England in the group stage.

The South American team had excellent opportunities to start the scoring much earlier, including a free kick by Rodrguez, two long range attempts by captain Fabricio Dáz, and a header by Anderson Duarte that required one of the best saves of the competition from Italy goalkeeper Sebastiano Desplanches.

Cesare Casadei of Italy, who led the competition in scoring with seven goals, had a lackluster showing in the championship game.

Although neither Uruguay nor Italy were among the favorites when the U20 World Cup began on May 20, their clubs were less reluctant to release players for the competition than Brazil, Argentina, and England.

Clubs are not required to permit their players to compete in international youth competitions.

In 1997 and 2013, Uruguay was defeated in the tournament’s finale. Brazil was the final South American winner in 2011.

The victory for the Celeste follows Argentina’s World Cup victory in December, which also marked the end of a run of victories by European teams.

In an earlier match in the same venue in La Plata, Israel defeated South Korea 3-1 to claim third place.

At first, Indonesia was supposed to host the competition, but the Muslim-majority nation refused to allow Israel to take part. One month before the match, FIFA made the decision to give the organization over to Argentina.
