The UFC 292 fight between Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley is now confirmed.
Tuesday night, UFC president Dana White declared the bout official along with the co-main event between strawweight champion Zhang Weili and challenger Amanda Lemos, which he had teased for late summer during the previous pay-per-view event.
On Aug. 19, UFC 292 will take place at Boston’s TD Garden. There were no further scheduled contests for the schedule as of yet.
The main event of UFC 288 in New Jersey saw Sterling (23-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC) defend his 135-pound title for the third time earlier this month. Henry Cejudo’s comeback from retirement was spoilt when he was defeated by “The Funkmaster” on a split decision.
After that, O’Malley (16-1 MMA, 8-1) was brought into the octagon to advertise Sterling and O’Malley’s title bout.
O’Malley just earned a split decision victory over former champion Petr Yan at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi in October. The 28-year-old has gone five bouts without a loss. Marlon Vera of Ecuador was the opponent for his sole loss, which occurred in the year 2020.
Weili (23-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) makes her return for her first fight in 2023 in the card’s co-main event. She last competed in the co-main event of UFC 281 in New York last November, when she defeated Carla Esparza to reclaim the women’s strawweight title. Weili has won her last two fights after suffering two defeats against Rose Namajunas in 2021. She has only suffered two losses inside the octagon.
Lemos (13-2-1 MMA, 7-2 UFC) hasn’t yet made a 2023 appearance either. In the main event of UFC Fight Night 214 in November of last year, she defeated top contender Marina Rodriguez. She now has an eight-match winning streak and is 7-1 overall.
