Despite the uncertainties surrounding the club’s ownership, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is optimistic that the Red Devils will be able to move through with their transfer business this summer.
The Glazer family, United’s present owners, have received sizable proposals from parties like Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al-Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe; various news outlets are reporting that the latter’s offer is preferred; nonetheless, there is still a great deal of ambiguity surrounding the entire process.
Uncertainty surrounds whether the Glazers will stay at the club as part of any buyout, and the selling decision has been delayed for months and will now conflict with the summer transfer window, raising concerns that Ten Hag may not have the funding he needs to improve the team.
Regardless of what is happening behind the scenes, the Dutchman is convinced he will be able to move forward with his plans for the team this summer.
“Yeah, that’s what I’m doing and that’s our job,” he told Sky Sports News when asked if he has been able to plan adequately for the summer amid all the uncertainty.
“This season that has to be our energy and the focus, but of course we are also planning for the future, for next season and that’s what we have to do. And that is also talking with your scouting department, recruitment responsibilities, and talking with players of course.”
Asked whether he was confident United could move for their top targets even if the Glazers remain at the club, Ten Hag added: “I think so. I came in here [at the end of] last season and we talked about what can we do in the squad, what can we do in transfers.
“And last year, the club confirmed they can do. So, for me, I don’t think anything changed and yeah, in this summer period we can do the same.”
Ten Hag has high hopes for a new striker. Harry Kane of Tottenham continues to be the top target, although Victor Osimhen of Napoli, Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus, and Lautaro Martinez of Inter are all on the market. Various reports are indicating that more than one new forward will be signed.
Ten Hag is also looking for a new centre back and is interested in Kim Min-jae of Napoli, who has a tempting release clause of anywhere between €40 million and €60 million, which has attracted the attention of several clubs in Europe.
