Saint-Germain have ended the 2019/20 season with heartbreak, despite it being the best in their history.
They won four titles in France and were one step away from winning the Champions League for the first time in their history.
Their 1.2 billion euro project runs on, but there are some questions about the future of PSG as Ligue 1 returns for them on Saturday against Lens.
“We did everything we could,” said president Nasser Al-Khelaifi after Sunday’s final.
“But it was our first final and Bayern Munich have played 11.
“We just need to polish some details.
“We got to the final and won four trophies, it’s not bad.”
All signs suggest that coach Thomas Tuchel will continue in his role, even though sporting director Leonardo refused to give much away about his continuity before the final eight got going.
As things stand, Tuchel will stay and so will Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, who are pillars of the side.
The Brazilian will be the axis upon which everything is focused, especially as he is now considered to be a more mature and rounded person who is ready to lead a side to the Champions League.
His performances and behaviour this season have improved on previous campaigns, but just a year ago he tried to force an exit.
Mbappe has already said that he’ll be staying for next season, even though he hasn’t yet renewed his contract which expires in 2022.
Some veteran players are leaving, though.
Edinson Cavani will be joined by Thiago Silva on his way out of the club, while Thomas Meunier and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting also follow.
This all means that PSG are looking for a central defender, a right-back and maybe a midfielder as well to add to their ranks for 2020/21.
They’ll go again domestically this coming season and in the Champions League, where they’ll be confident of winning their group again given that they’ll be placed in pot one when the draw takes place.
