Pogba suspended after testing positive for testosterone

Paul Pogba, a midfielder for Juventus, tested positive for testosterone on Monday, according to Italy’s anti-doping organization.

The test was conducted following Juventus’ Aug. 20 match at Udinese. Pogba was on Juventus’ bench but did not participate in the Serie A game.

The anti-doping organization Nado Italia said that Pogba has been suspended temporarily with immediate effect. He runs the risk of a four-year suspension while his case is tried and a backup B sample is tested.

When they discovered the illegal chemical “non-endogenous testosterone metabolites,” the panel ruled that Pogba had broken the anti-doping rules, adding that the findings were “consistent with the exogenous origin of the target compounds.”

Juventus acknowledged the suspension in a statement, saying that it would “evaluate the next procedural steps.”

For a player who has struggled with injuries ever since joining Juventus from Manchester United a little over a year ago, it’s another discouraging development. He sustained a knee injury last year that prevented him from participating in France’s World Cup run.

Police in France are also looking into claims that Pogba was the object of extortion, including by his older brother Mathias, who has denied any involvement. Pogba stated earlier on Monday that as the situation developed, he thought about retirement.

This season, Pogba has yet to make a start, but he has come on as a substitute twice, most recently in the 2-0 victory at Empoli.

Additionally, it’s a setback for Juventus after a season ruined by investigations into false accounting and incorrect wage reporting. Due to the legal issues, UEFA disqualified the Turin club from this season’s European competition.

Pogba didn’t respond right away.
