Lamine Yamal, a forward for Barcelona, made history on Friday by scoring on his debut in Spain’s 7-1 European Championship qualifying victory over Georgia, becoming him the youngest player and goal scorer for the country’s men’s senior team.
He surpasses Gavi, a teammate from Barcelona, who made his La Roja debut in 2021 at the age of 17 years and 62 days, to become Spain’s youngest player at the age of 16 years and 57 days.
The final three spots are filled by Angel Zubieta (17 years, 284 days), Ansu Fati (17 years, 208 days), and Bojan Krkic (18 years, 13 days).
Yamal quickly added another record to his resume after entering the game as a substitute in Georgia’s 44th minute by scoring Spain’s seventh and final goal in the 74th.
Yamal beat out Wales legend Gareth Bale (17 years and 83 days) to become not just Spain’s youngest scorer but also the youngest player to score in Euro qualifying.
Through his parents, Yamal is also qualified to represent Morocco and Equatorial Guinea, however he has only ever played for Spain, where he was born, in youth competitions.
After meeting with representatives from the Royal Spanish Football Federation [RFEF] in Barcelona at the end of August, he took the choice to play for the nation’s senior team.
The adolescent had a fantastic year after making his LaLiga debut for Barça in April, making him the club’s youngest player to play in the league.
When he came off the bench against Real Betis, he was only 15 years old. A week later, he made history by becoming the club’s B team’s youngest player ever.
After that, he participated in the U17 European Championships, scoring four goals before Spain was defeated by France in the semifinals.
He was then selected by Barça coach Xavi Hernandez for the team’s preseason tour of the United States, and his subsequent performances have helped him secure a spot in the starting lineup.
He started Barça’s last three games after coming off the bench in the season opener at Getafe, winning player of the match honors after assisting on two goals in the 4-3 victory at Villarreal last month.
