Bayern Munich overpowered Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16, gaining a crucial first-leg advantage.
Despite being the home team, PSG were willing to let Bayern control the ball early on as they attempted to capitalize.
As a result, Bayern had the early chances. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting missed his first attempt from long range.
Naturally, PSG posed a constant danger. On the quarter-hour, Messi and Neymar combined, but Benjamin Pavard saw the threat.
The next significant opportunity of the game was created by Pavard. The Frenchman attempted to pass through, but this time Sergio Ramos stepped in with some strong defending. Jamal Musiala pounced on the opportunity.
Then, following some excellent work from Kingsley Coman, Choupo-Moting squandered another opportunity. His header missed to the left. A few minutes later, Coman tried his own shot, but it only made it into the side-netting.
PSG failed to produce a single shot on target by the time halftime sounded.
The fact that Bayern made their quality count on the scoreboard was the only major difference between the first half and the beginning of the second.
After the interval, PSG had greater possession of the ball, and there were undoubtedly some encouraging moments. When Kylian Mbappe was brought off the bench, they immediately appeared to be a much superior team.
However, Bayern had already taken the lead. Alphonso Davies, who was brought in at halftime, made an immediate effect with the cross, and Coman finished skillfully beneath Donnarumma’s body.
Mbappe was on the field, though, and PSG much improved. Late in the game, he had the ball in the net, but VAR properly disallowed it for an offside during the buildup.
A few seconds later, Lionel Messi came dangerously near, but Pavard made an outstanding stop to preserve the score tied.
In actuality, though, they didn’t deserve an equalizer, and Bayern finished the game to win the first leg. Only Pavard’s late red card in stoppage time made the Bavarians’ night miserable.
