Kim Min-jae’s representatives and Bayern Munich are negotiating a contract after the German club entered the race to sign the player.
The South Korean defender’s efforts for Napoli during their Serie A-winning season of 2022–2023 solidified his position as one of the top center backs in the world.
Kim followed recent winners Kalidou Koulibaly, Stefen de Vrij, Cristian Romero, and Gleison Bremer in winning the Serie A’s Best Defender title in conjunction to the Scudetto.
Recent reports said that Kim had declined a new contract offer from Napoli, which would have given him a large pay raise but, more importantly, removed the release clause, something he is unwilling to do.
According to the provision, Kim may leave Napoli in the first two weeks of July if an upfront bid of €50 million is made.
Although it is well known that the 26-year-old has fans in Manchester United, sources have indicated that they are now competing with Bayern Munich for Kim’s services.
Kim’s agents had hoped to seal a deal with Manchester United in the upcoming weeks, but Bayern have hinted that they are prepared to exercise the €50 million release clause once it goes into effect in just over a fortnight. They are currently engaged in transfer negotiations with the player’s camp.
Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain have been keeping an eye on Kim’s position in addition to United and Bayern.
When Kim returns to Europe in July after serving his required military duty in South Korea, he may already be on his way to a new club.
