In the run-up to their Tuesday night matchup in the UEFA Champions League semifinals, Bernardo Silva claims that Manchester City “do not fear” Real Madrid.
This week, City and Real Madrid will renew their Champions League rivalry after meeting in the semifinals the year before. That time, at the Santiago Bernabeu, three late goals from Rodrygo and Karim Benzema caused Pep Guardiola’s team to lose the match.
In a thrilling first leg at the Etihad Stadium, City won 4-3, and they maintained that lead until the very end in Madrid, when Rodrygo scored two goals in dramatic fashion to force extra-time.
Then, Benzema successfully converted a penalty to secure Real Madrid’s spot in the championship game against Liverpool, which they would win due to Vinicius Junior.
In spite of last season’s heartbreak, Silva, who is being watched by Real’s rivals Barcelona, has thought back on the loss one year later. However, he is certain that City do not fear their famed opponents.
Silva said, “We have a lot of respect for them, definitely, but no fear at all. Why is there a need for fear? As we know they won the Champions League last season for a cause, we’ll aim to maintain the momentum we’ve developed over the past two months to arrive quite confident to defeat them.
In a major injury update before the Champions League semifinal, Rafael Leao said:
“It’s not about the badge, it’s never about the badge. It’s about the players that are on the pitch. If Madrid didn’t have [Luka] Modric, [Toni] Kroos, Vinicius, Benzema – I could say all of them – they wouldn’t win anything because the shirt doesn’t do it on its own. We’d be stupid not to respect them but we have that goal knowing we lost last year in tough circumstances.”
“This time we will try to make it different.”
The Citizens enter the match as one of the most impressive squads in Europe, having won their last 10 Premier League games and their last 20 games overall without a loss.
