Brazilian knockout artist Alex Pereira (7-2) has his next task planned after putting an end to his middleweight title reign with a bang over a month ago.
After falling to Israel Adesanya in a mixed martial arts rematch at UFC 287 via knockout, Pereira declared his intention to leave the 185-pound weight class and try his hand at light heavyweight.
Now that he is competing at a heavier weight, “Poatan” has a goal to work toward.
Tuesday saw UFC President Dana White return to social media and make a number of significant announcements. That included a light heavyweight contest between Jan Bachowicz (29-9-1) and the newly arrived Pereira, who was the previous champion of the division.
The contest will be held as the co-main event of UFC 291, which will take place in Salt Lake City on July 29. The lightweight contenders Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje will square off in a rematch for the ceremonial “BMF” title above Pereira and Bachowicz on the card.
While Pereira will go to Utah for his second fight of 2023, Bachowicz’s fight will be his first of the year.
The Polish powerhouse failed to win a second reign at 205 pounds in his final appearance at UFC 282 in December 2022; a split draw with Magomed Ankalaev left the championship vacant at the time.
The former winner will attempt to stake his claim for a second chance at the gold by thwarting “Poatan’s” plans to compete in two divisions.
