Numbers in professional sports are what you make of them, and Jailton Almeida has a great submission game based on the number of important strikes he’s taken in his five UFC fights.
Even though Jairzinho Rozenstruik has some of the hardest punches in the UFC, it is quite difficult to defeat a black belt while pinned on one’s back and attempting to avoid a python-style choke. The third time Almeida has won a bout without taking a serious hit came on Saturday, when Rozenstruik failed to land a single significant blow.
Rozenstruik was placed in the cage’s middle by Almeida, who then carefully and methodically sought to enhance his position. In the opening minute of the main event of UFC Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina, he took Rozenstruik’s back and immediately submitted him with a rear naked choke.
Only two serious strikes have been absorbed by Almeida in his six UFC fights, where he is 5-0 with three submissions and two TKOs. He has also made 114 major strikes at the same period. He also attempted 10 takedowns, and he was successful in 70% of them.
After the fight, he specifically mentioned Tai Tuivasa and declared his intention to return to the ring in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in October.
Like Rozenstruik, Tuivasa has the ability to knock out opponents quickly, but if that fight does place, he’ll have to fight for his life to keep it moving. Few of the top heavyweights will be able to hold their own against Almeida for very long on the ground.
“To have a fight like this in my first main event, I’m very happy,” Almeida said after the bout.
For the majority of his career, he alternated between light heavyweight and heavyweight, but he decided to transition to heavyweight full-time in 2018. Although he weighed in on Saturday at 231 pounds, 34 pounds lighter than Rozenstruik, his strength, speed, and most importantly, his excellent level of jiu-jitsu, will make up for his lack of stature against most opponents.
Almeida gave former UFC fighter and trainer Carlos Felipe credit for helping him prepare and advance. Rozenstruik, like all of his rivals, was well aware of what Almeida would attempt. However, Rozenstruik was powerless to stop it.
He was swiftly turned over, and from that point on, everything was a matter of time.
The former lightweight champion of the UFC, Khabib Nurmagomedov, “actually won like this,” according to Almeida. “Everybody said Jairzinho was one of the most dangerous guys in the division and said he was going to knock me out.”
That didn’t occur, which should have propelled Almeida up to at least eighth place, where Rozenstruik was ranked. And now, if the other heavyweights want to rise to the top, they will have to take him seriously.
