After guiding Argentina to World Cup triumph in Qatar, Lionel Scaloni has been named the Best FIFA Men’s Coach for 2022.
After his hiring in 2018, the 44-year-old proved critics wrong by achieving triumph in the 2021 Copa America, ending the Albiceleste‘s 28-year title streak.
Messi and Argentina followed that achievement with a World Cup victory in 2022, overcoming an early setback to Saudi Arabia to reach the final, where they defeated France on penalties.
Scaloni accepted the prize in Paris and congratulated his team, saying: “Making your people and nation happy is the most wonderful thing. It’s invaluable. This triumph belongs to them.”
Scaloni recently secured a new contract extension with Argentina that would keep him in the job until the next World Cup in 2026.
Argentina lost their first World Cup game in startling way, falling to Saudi Arabia, but Scaloni managed a comeback that saw his team defeat Australia, the Netherlands, Croatia, and eventually France in the final.
