Alexia Putellas of Barcelona won Best FIFA Women’s Player again in the 2022 event, having previously won it in 2021.
Putellas is also the reigning back-to-back Ballon d’Or winner for 2021 and 2022, and her newest honor confirms her standing as the world’s top female player.
What’s more, the Spaniard hasn’t played since sustaining an ACL injury in June. Her hopes of guiding Spain to triumph in a major international event for the first time were dashed, but her performances for Barcelona up to that moment had already left an indelible imprint on 2022.
Barcelona had a flawless season in Spain in 2021/22, winning all of their games. The club scored 159 goals while conceding only 11, and Putellas had her finest individual season yet, scoring 34 goals across all competitions.
The Catalans also easily won the Cup de la Reina and the Supercopa de Espana Femenina, completing a domestic triple. They were one game away from completing the quadruple, reaching their second consecutive Champions League final but losing to Lyon in a battle of giants.
Putellas defeated Beth Mead to win the FIFA award, having previously beaten England’s forward to the Ballon d’Or and finished ahead of rising American star Alex Morgan.
The 29-year-old midfielder accelerated her ACL rehabilitation in December, beginning to run on grass at Barcelona’s training complex and boosting the prospect of being totally healthy before the season’s finish. Her participation in the 2023 World Cup, however, remains in doubt due to her support for the 15 players who have refused to be called up by current Spanish coach Jorge Vilda.
