Sevilla confirmed the appointment of Diego Alonso as their new head coach on Tuesday.

José Luis Mendilibar, the former Inter Miami CF manager, was fired on Monday after the team’s terrible start to the season.

Alonso, 48, will lead the squad for the rest of the season.

The former Atletico Madrid star has been out of work since standing down as Uruguay’s coach in December following the country’s failure to advance past the group stages of the 2022 World Cup.

This will be Alonso’s first experience coaching in Europe.

He has coached Pearol and Bella Vista in his native Uruguay, as well as Olimpia and Guarani in Paraguay.

His longest coaching tenure was with Pachuca, a Mexican club he led to the Mexican championship in 2016.

With Pachuca and Monterrey, he also won the CONCACAF Champions League.

Alonso joined Inter Miami before the club’s inaugural season in 2019, but his performance was uneven, and he left by mutual consent in January 2021.

Later that year, he took over as manager of Uruguay’s national team.

Alonso took over a Sevilla club that had won only two of its first eight LaLiga games.

The 2-2 league tie against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday dropped the team to 14th place in the standings, with eight points from a possible 24.

Sevilla, the Europa League champions last season, drew their first two UEFA Champions League games and are currently third in their group.

Sevilla welcome LaLiga leaders Real Madrid on Oct. 21 before hosting Arsenal in the Champions League three days later at the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium.
