Lautaro Martinez’s late goal salvaged a 1-1 draw for runner-up Inter Milan against Real Sociedad in the Champions League opener on Wednesday.

The Basque squad appeared to be the more dominant side for the majority of the game, their first Champions group-stage participation in a decade, while the Serie A leaders will be grateful for their opponents’ missed chances in front of goal after a performance that fell short of their unbeaten league record.

Brais Méndez stole the ball on the edge of the Inter box and fired into the bottom right corner to put the hosts up 1-0 after only four minutes.

Real had chances to extend their lead, but Robin Le Normand headed wide before halftime, and new keeper Yann Sommer made a fantastic stop from close range to deny Mikel Oyarzabal at the opening of the second half.

Inter began to harass their opponents’ area until the final few minutes of the game, but were unable to equalize until Martinez scored in the 87th minute for his sixth goal in five games this season.

In Group D, Inter and Real Sociedad are two points behind RB Salzburg, who won 2-0 at Benfica despite an early red card for António Silva.
