Poland are hoping striker Robert Lewandowski will be fit for their Euro 2024 Group D match against Austria on Friday, but are waiting for the medical team’s approval later in the day, coach Michal Probierz stated on Thursday.

Lewandowski, Poland’s all-time leading scorer, sustained a thigh injury in a warm-up friendly against Turkey last week, and although being selected on the bench against the Netherlands in their group opener on Sunday, he did not play in the 2-1 loss.

The medical staff has worked hard to get him fit, and he will participate in the team’s final training session on Thursday in Berlin’s Olympiastadion, according to the coach.

The 35-year-old Lewandowski is not the only one waiting to see if he will be considered fit to participate; defender Pawel Dawidowicz is also hoping to join the squad after suffering an injury in the same friendly as his teammate.

Austria was also defeated by France in their tournament opener, and Friday’s encounter in Berlin has become a must-win for either team if they want to advance in the tournament.

Poland and Austria have no points, while the Netherlands and France have three. The top two automatically advance to the knockout stage.

The top four third-place teams from all six groups also progress. On June 25, the Poles will play their final group match against France.
