Gareth Southgate has revealed that his England squad is struggling to cope with the pressure of winning Euro 2024 following a 1-1 draw against Denmark on Thursday in Frankfurt, Germany.
Harry Kane gave England the lead in the 18th minute, but Morten Hjulmand levelled 16 minutes later, and despite Phil Foden hitting the post midway through the second half, the Danes appeared to be the more likely winners after that.
England remains top of Group C heading into Tuesday’s last encounter against Slovenia, although they were booed off by a sizable portion of their own fans.
Southgate met with his 26-man squad earlier this week to discuss the various reactions to England’s opening triumph over Serbia, which sources say surprised several of the players, considering that 12 of them had never competed in a senior event before.
England has four points from two games, having defeated Serbia 1-0 in their opening match. That point total has always been sufficient to advance in the 24-team Euros format.
Nonetheless, England may finish anywhere from first to third in the Group C standings after facing unbeaten Slovenia.
