At UFC 285 earlier this year, Gane suffered a first-round submission loss to Jon Jones. After losing to Francis Ngannou in the previous year’s heavyweight title match, Gane lost his second try to win the vacant heavyweight championship in the UFC.
Since the sad loss in March, Gane has remained silent. After two title defeats in the last two years, he hasn’t been scheduled for a comeback fight and is in an uncommon position at the top of the category.
Fans may not have to wait long, though, since Gane is planning a big-name opponent for his comeback fight.
Coach Fernand Lopez provided an update on the return of Gane to the Octagon during a recent interview with MiddleEasy.
Lopez gave a goal date for Gane’s return as “September.” Sergei Pavlovich would make for a solid opponent.
The best-case scenario for Sergei Pavlovich would be a title shot in his upcoming bout, but a clash with Gane would be a close second. In his first UFC main event of his career, he most recently defeated Curtis Blaydes via first-round TKO.
Gane defeated Tuivasa at UFC Paris last year to earn the opportunity to challenge for the belt before Jones’ victory. Prior to his defeats by Ngannou and Jones, he had won his previous 10 fights in total.
A clash between Gane and Pavlovich would be advantageous for both parties while the Jones vs. Stipe Miocic fight remains uncertain. Fans should anticipate a standup battle inside the Octagon if they are booked against one another.
