Crystal Palace Expect Reds to Make the First Formal Approach

Crystal Palace believe Liverpool are the only club likely to make a January move for England defender Marc Guehi, according to Sky Sports News reporting — placing the Premier League champions in pole position ahead of Europe’s elite.

While Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona remain interested, those clubs are understood to be preparing summer offers, when Guehi is expected to become available on a free transfer.

Liverpool’s Earlier £35m Deal Fell Through

Liverpool were close to securing Guehi for £35 million on Deadline Day, before Palace withdrew due to an inability to find a replacement in time.

As the winter transfer window nears, Liverpool’s defensive concerns continue to mount:

  • Giovanni Leoni is sidelined with a long-term injury
  • Ibrahima Konaté has yet to agree a new deal, with his contract expiring this summer
  • Konaté recently hinted that a decision on his future is coming “very soon”

Liverpool must now choose between pushing for a January bid or waiting for a free transfer in June — but competition from Europe will grow.

Crystal Palace’s Position

Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed in October that Guehi has informed the club he will not sign a new contract.
His current deal runs until 30 June 2026, and he is permitted to begin formal talks with foreign clubs starting 1 January.

Injury & Return Update

Guehi is expected to return to Crystal Palace’s lineup this weekend against Wolves after recovering from the foot injury that forced him out of England duty.

The issue occurred late in Palace’s Conference League win over AZ Alkmaar, and he subsequently missed the draw with Brighton.
