Lionel Messi was named The Best FIFA Men’s Player for 2022 on Monday night in Paris.
It was Messi’s second time winning this award in particular; his previous triumph came in 2019 after leading Barcelona to another La Liga title.
Unlike the Ballon d’Or, which is only voted on by a select group of journalists, FIFA’s The Best awards are voted on by both players and coaches.
Every national team’s captain and manager can vote for their top three, with first place receiving five points, second receiving three points, and third receiving one point.
Messi, as Argentina’s captain, had a voice in the honors, but was unable to vote for himself.
He selected a surprise player to win The Best FIFA Men’s title, with PSG colleague and close friend Neymar – the only other captain to offer him a first-place vote was Brazil’s Thiago Silva.
Messi’s second-place vote went to another PSG teammate, Kylian Mbappe, who finished one spot behind the Argentine.
Messi’s third and final vote went to Real Madrid and France striker Karim Benzema.
Messi’s votes for the Best FIFA Men’s Coach award gave Argentina manager and eventual winner Lionel Scaloni five points, Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola three points, and France’s Didier Deschamps one point.
The forward also supported a fellow countryman for the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award. Argentina’s Emi Martinez won the award and was Messi’s first-choice selection, with Thibaut Courtois and Yassine Bounou collecting his other votes.
