France needed to come from an objective down to beat Australia in their initial World Cup group stage match.

Didier Deschamps‘ world champions fell behind from the beginning yet mobilized back with a superb group execution.

The Aussies took a shock lead after just nine minutes after Harry Souttar‘s cross-field ball was met by Matthew Leckie, who cut inside Lucas Hernandez and crossed for Craig Goodwin to fire into the top of the net.

Australia went close to multiplying their benefit soon after when Theo Hernandez – on for his harmed sibling – surrendered possession too easily to Mitchell Duke, whose strike flittered barely wide of the post.

In any case, France found a leveler with 27 minutes on the clock when a cleared corner tumbled to Hernandez, and his cross was going home by Adrien Rabiot from simple yards out.

The champions went in front not long in the wake of having won the ball back high up the pitch, with Nathaniel Atkinson looted by Kylian Mbappe and Rabiot. The last option then selflessly squared for Olivier Giroud to take advantage of an unfilled net.

In the wake of recuperating from their initial setback, France were starting to play their direction through Australia. Mbappe was proceeding to run rings round Atkinson and Antoine Griezmann terminated wide from 20 yards.

Mbappe somehow volleyed a cross from Griezmann over the top from six yards out on the stroke of half-time, before Jackson Irvine headed against the post in stoppage time.

Just after the break, Giroud came close with a gymnastic above kick which licked the paint of Mat Ryan’s upstanding.

A last-ditch challenge from Kye Rowles held Mbappe back from getting on the scoresheet after a wonderful one-two with Giroud, and Griezmann had a shot from 18 yards cleaned up the line by Aziz Behich.

Mbappe finally got on the scoresheet halfway through the second half when he jumped high to gesture in a cunningly chipped cross from Ousmane Dembele.

Giroud then tied Thierry Henry’s record as France’s unequaled scorer with his very own header from a Mbappe cross in the minutes that followed Les Bleus’ third.

Ibrahima Konate constrained Ryan into a flying save with his first hint of the ball, with the previous Brighton stopper flying across his line to deny the header Hernandez had his very own header kept out seconds after the fact.

France’s victory was confirmed following seven minutes of stoppage time, turning into the first authoritative world hero to win their initial gathering stage match since Brazil in 2006.
