Fireworks from Funes Mori as Mexico down Guatemala

DALLAS, Texas – Rogelio Funes Mori produced some goalscoring fireworks with a pair of scores to help lead Mexico to a 3-0 victory against Guatemala in Group A action of the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup on Wednesday night at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.

The goals served as just the second and third international goals for Funes Mori with El Tricolor and his first in Concacaf competition.

Mexico started off on the front foot with a trio of chances, including an Erick Gutierrez shot in the 25’ that required a reaction save from Guatemala GK Nicholas Hagen.

However, four minutes later in the 29’, there was nothing Hagen could do to stop Funes Mori from scoring Mexico’s first goal of the Gold Cup when he collected a pass on the left edge of the area and curled a right-footed shot off the post and into goal for a 1-0 lead.

The opportunities continued for Mexico into the second half and Orbelin Pineda was inches away from making it two in the 47’, but a diving last-ditch save from Hagen prevented the goal.

Funes Mori would strike again, this time in the 55’, when he received a cut-back pass from Pineda and fired into goal to double the Mexico advantage to 2-0.

Mexico were keen to increase their lead to leave no doubt and Jesus Corona came within a whisker of a third in the 75’, but saw his shot trickle wide.

Pineda would get the job done, though, with a flying header in the 79’ off a Luis Rodriguez cross from the right wing to round out the 3-0 score line.
